Skincare for dry skin

Dry skin does not produce enough natural oils or lipids. As a result, the skin barrier may be less effective at retaining moisture and protecting the skin against external influences. The skin can feel tight, rough, sensitive or flaky and may temporarily appear red.

Dry skin is not the same as dehydrated skin. Dry skin primarily needs lipids such as ceramides, botanical oils and nourishing butters. Dehydrated skin lacks water and benefits from moisture-binding ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and panthenol.

Many people have skin that is both dry and dehydrated. In this case, hydrating serums and lipid-rich moisturisers can be combined.

• The skin feels tight soon after cleansing.
• Dry, rough or flaky areas are visible.
• Fine dehydration lines become more noticeable.
• The complexion appears matte or dull.
• Cold weather, wind, heating and air conditioning quickly cause discomfort.
• The skin may feel sensitive or temporarily look red.
• Makeup collects around dry patches.
• Pores are generally small and little oil is produced.

MORNING ROUTINE FOR DRY SKIN

1. Cleanse with a gentle, non-drying cleanser.

2. Apply a hydrating, preferably alcohol-free toner.

3. Use a serum containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin or panthenol.

4. Apply dedicated eye care if required.

5. Follow with a moisturiser containing ceramides, oils or nourishing butters.

6. Finish with broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30.

EVENING ROUTINE FOR DRY SKIN

1. Remove makeup and sunscreen with a gentle cleanser.

2. Cleanse without using very hot water or rubbing.

3. Apply a hydrating toner if desired.

4. Use a moisture-binding or calming serum.

5. Finish with a rich moisturiser that helps reduce moisture loss.

6. Apply a hydrating mask one or more times per week.

You do not need to use every product from the same brand. Choose according to your skin condition, texture preference and tolerance.

TAKE CARE WITH DRY SKIN

• Avoid harsh cleansers that leave the skin feeling tight.
• Do not cleanse with very hot water.
• Avoid using coarse scrubs or strong peels every day.
• Introduce retinol, glycolic acid and salicylic acid gradually.
• Do not combine several strong acids and retinol in one routine.
• Do not apply facial acids or retinol around the eyes.
• Reduce active products if the skin becomes red, flaky or uncomfortable.
• Apply sunscreen every morning.

DRY OR DEHYDRATED SKIN?

Dry skin does not produce enough lipids and benefits from rich creams, ceramides, oils and butters.

Dehydrated skin temporarily lacks water. It can also be oily or combination and primarily benefits from moisture-binding serums and suitable hydrating moisturisers.

If your skin feels both rough and flaky as well as tight and dull, combine a hydrating serum with a lipid-rich moisturiser.
